All you need is.. Library Love!

For some reason people think I'm kidding when I say some of my fondest memories as a child were spent going to my local library.

I was one of those kids that enjoyed going to school, learning and the entire education process as a whole. I was (and still am) a self professed bookworm. I actually enjoy reading. I'm puzzled as to why this concept seems so difficult for some to believe. I use to walk and read on my way home from school each day. Not the safest way to cross the street at eleven years old, but hey my peripheral vision some would argue is better than my actual vision.

I remember my older brother being embarrassed by his "geeky" bookworm sister. He was in middle school while I was still in elementary, it was his job to meet me after school at Baskin Robbins across the way from P.S. 69 and walk home together (This was where I started my first job years later at 14). I can still see the mortification on his face one day when he walked in and saw me doing my homework while waiting. (Gasp) I was required to walk/read about a half block behind him and his friends so they wouldn't find out we were related. I had crazy wild curly hair (still do), with bunny teeth (still do), and bright red Sally Jessy Raphael looking glasses (I would still rock those if I could find them). Wouldn't YOU want to be related to me??? (To his credit he has since reformed but lovingly calls me his white baboon, we are very close).

Anyhow, I digress..

The library to a kid like me was a place of endless possibility! I felt like not only could I be anything I wanted while I was there, I already was it. When I decided I wanted to be a judge, I went to the library and checked out a book on legal terminology. I figured if I was going to be the first Puerto Rican Supreme Court Judge I'd better learn the lingo. I would watch Court TV and listen to "the dance" between lawyers in the courtroom and practice using "Objection!" and whether or not I felt it was cause for "Overruled" or "Sustained" (I still do this). The Library fueled this need inside of me to figure out who I was and what I really wanted to do. I would decide what sort of profession I wanted to learn about that day, find a book about it and disappear into the pages in a quiet corner at the end of an aisle. I had a ritual, I would open the book I was interested in to about half way and take a big sniff (I still do this). There is a comfort in the smell of an old library book that I just can't get from a newly printed book, or my Nook Book. It may be the quality of the paper, or the richness of the ink that sparks such wanderlust. It makes me sad sometimes to think that there may very well be a generation who will not understand this feeling.

We visit our local libraries often for story time and to round up a bunch of books to bring home, it feels great to share this joy with my children. I was able to see the same big bright smile as my oldest son got his first library card this summer. His face lit up with excitement of the same endless possibilities I still feel when I walk through those double doors.

One of my favorite quotes is:

"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

-Cicero

It's really important to me to be able to instill the same values in my children. That no matter how impossible, crazy or even outlandish an idea may seem to others, if it is your dream it is possible. The things that matter to us, or speak to us are not random. They are a part of our calling it seems, in some aspect. If you follow that little voice inside you, I believe it will in some way help someone else. Whether it be to follow their dream or help someone else along the way.

With that being said, I have decided to add a new segment to the Essentially Erika blog. A Book Club of sorts, entitled "What I'm Reading". I will be posting great reading material that has contributed in some way over the years and presently to the thoughts, ideas or values that this blog's foundation is built on. It will most likely be based on subjects such as parenting, early childhood development, nature, music & the arts or even the dreaded self-help book sprinkled in here and there for good measure. It's a running joke that whenever you come to me with a problem, I'm sure to have a book recommendation for you. Well now it's official!

What have you checked out recently? Have any good book recommendations? I'd love to hear them!

Essential Oils: Bumps & Bruises

Living with two boys under the age of four, you can imagine how many bumps and bruises I see on a weekly basis. Oddly enough it's always my little guy who takes all the tumbles. He tends to be a bit more risky than his older brother who is a little more of a risk analyst when it comes to tricky maneuvers.

The tumble he recently took off off the couch onto my tile floor and into his Fisher Price record player was not a pretty one. It caught him right between the eyes and it started to swell so fast he was beginning to look like a unicorn!

I remember reading on the coveted Modern Wellness page on Facebook that Deep Blue was supposed to help with swelling.
I raced to my oil stash and grabbed ol' trusty tried and true blue! Just a dab will do, although I will say this: Be sure and keep away from the eyes, this oil is potent and can burn terribly if rubbed into a little one's eye.

The true test would be in the bruising in the days to come. I should have taken a picture right away but I was busy consoling a very distraught two year old.

But here you have it!

He never got a shiner as I suspected, and it went straight into the healing phase. By the next day it was visibly swollen, but nothing like before and it was already turning yellow / green. It wasnt tender to the touch and as you can see his mood had greatly improved! (Pardon the shameless plug, I couldn't resist!)

By day two the swelling had completely subsided and you could barely tell he had any bruising at all.

Another victory for Deep Blue and #DrMom!

Thinking of ordering an extra bottle to keep on hand just in case. With these two guys something tells me I'm not quite in the clear just yet!

If you'd like to learn more about Deep Blue or any of DoTerra's essential oils you may do so at www.mydoterra.com/erikasessentials.

Are You Drinking REAL WATER???

When I was pregnant with my son, I remember always feeling so thirsty. Which didn't make any sense to me because I was pretty much drowning myself in your average store-bought water. It wasn't until my sister-in-law broke down the science of water production to me, and how important the pH balance in the water is (Thanks Dee!).

All bottled water is created equal, right??? WRONG!!!

Come to find out the pH balance in most of the store-bought water I was drinking was only at about a level 4-5 at best. Normal pH level in your water should be at least at a 7! No matter how much water I was drinking it was actually causing me to become dehydrated!

Enter REAL WATER! The pH in REAL WATER is at an 8! (part the clouds, cue the angels!)

According to REAL WATER, most drinking water can be unhealthy because it is too acidic and has been stripped of valuable electrons. Many health professionals believe an acidic body can lead to dramatic health problems. The NEXT problem with most water (yes there's more) is that it has been stripped of valuable electrons during filtration, purification and generally moving through pipes. This results in the water molecules competing for the remaining electrons and clumping together.

Once this happens, the molecules now have a positive (+) charge and can be measured by what is called an Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) meter. Some common brands of water tested in at upwards of +269 on the ORP meter!!! (I know, it was like speaking French to me too)

What is so dangerous about positive ions??? These positively charged water molecules are actually FREE RADICALS that want to steal electrons from healthy cells. This is called oxidation and causes cellular damage and premature aging.. (Yup, I said it) Besides free radical damage, positive ionized water molecules are rejected by something called our aquaporins. They are channels that let good water in and reject harmful water. When a water molecule is positively charged and clumped, the aquaporin rejects it, it wont let it in.

Hence my dehydration!!! While pregnant...In the third trimester... In the summertime...In South Florida... You get the picture. Your cells don't want a free radical running around causing damage or even killing cells. Since these aquaporins are so selective (for your own good), you could be drinking a ton of water like me, but never really hydrating yourself on a cellular level.

REAL WATER takes it to the next level, it is slightly alkaline which helps your body move towards a more alkalized and healthful state. They've gone beyond alkalinity... it's alkalized infused with negative (-) ions! It's the only water available today that can maintain a stable negative ionization. These negative ions literally attack free radicals that cause oxidative damage providing a powerful antioxidant effect with every bottle you drink! And boy do you feel it!

REAL WATER is hands down the BEST bottled water I have ever had. You can taste the alkalized goodness with every drop. It's crisp, cool and refreshing taste leaves you hydrated every time! I am in love and you will be too! Luckily, you can find REAL WATER at your local Publix grocery store and at select Whole Foods Markets. You can visit www.drinkrealwater.com to find your local retailer, order online or enter to win a free case of REAL WATER!

If you'd like to learn more about your water, see Alkalize or Die by Theodore A. Baroody; Reverse Aging by Sang Whang; and The pH Miracle for Weight Loss by Dr. Robert O. Young.

What are you drinking? Tell me, I'd love to know!

Homemade: Laundry Detergent Update

I am always searching for new and interesting updates for all of my cleaning supply recipes. I've heard about Kirk's Original CoCo Castile Soap, but had never found it in any stores.

I finally came across it on a recent shopping trip and decided to give it a try. Definitely a pleasant surprise! It's much milder than the Fels Naptha brand castile soap I've used before, and lighter than the usual Zote soap we have become accustomed to here at home. Overal a pleasant addition to your homemade laundry detergent, the mild scent allowed me to play and add a different essential oil than the usual Lavender.

This time I used the DoTerra blend Purify, its a natural disinfectant capable of killing airborne pathogens and strengthening the immune system. I also use this blend in my homemade deodorant and homemade lysol spray. It smells great, it leaves behind a hint of sweet Lemongrass that is invigorating!

I grate it in my food processor the same as any other castile soap, then add my Borax and Super Washing Soda along with about 10 drops of oil. (Purify is a powerful blend!)

Hope you enjoy as much as I do!

Essential Oils: Cry, Cry Baby!!!

Mascara!

Some of us like it, some of us NEED it. Or we look like the crypt keeper.. (I'm not pointing fingers..)

In my personal experience, my mascara dries out really quickly and if I dare to keep using it I'm in tears the entire day/night. I'm positive this cannot be good for the eyeballs! I walk around feeling like I have a lash stuck in my eye constantly.

If you're anything like me and love all the flashy and gimmicky $40 mascara that promises to give you "Bette Davis Eyes", then this can get pretty pricey! Even the vegan brand mascara I've recently switched over to is on the up side at $28 a pop.

Being the essential oil freak that I am I knew there had to be a remedy to my lash woes.

Voila!

Enter Lavender...

Lavender is one of those multifaceted oils that I use for EVERYTHING!

Add just one drop of pure lavender essential oil to your tube of mascara and no more tears!

Lavender has antiseptic properties and nourishes your eyelashes, plus it smells amazing!

It extends the life of your mascara and keeps it from drying out so quickly, plus it promotes healthy lash growth. Bonus!

You can check out Lavender and all the other essential oils and blends DoTerra has to offer at www.mydoterra.com/erikasessentials.

Stop! It's Hummus Time!

If your kids are anything like mine, they love hummus! On celery, carrots, apples or cucumbers.. Seriously, ANYTHING!

Store bought organic hummus isn't cheap! Not even from BJ's, or Costco.. Yes I have a membership to both, don't ask.

Well, I've finally found a recipe that works for us and now I'm sharing it with you! Keeping it super simple here so feel free to add any extras (like olives, sun-dried tomatoes or basil) to really zhuzh it up!
You will need:

2 (14oz) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/2 tsp garlic, minced
1 1/2 tsp salt
5 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/3 cup tahini
1/4 cup olive oil

Combine chickpeas, garlic, and salt in a food processor. Purée for 30 seconds, scrape down sides of bowl and purée another 30 seconds. Add the lemon juice and 1/4 cup of water and purée another 30 seconds. Add tahini and purée again. Scrape sides of the bowl, drizzle in the EVOO and mix until blended.

That's it! Keep it simple and save!

#ThriftyMom scores again! Enjoy!

Essential Oils: Growing Pains.. Who Needs Em'?

Until recently I've only heard of these "growing pains" that parents speak of.

Don't get me wrong, my boys were both really fast growers, but I could never recall a time where they complained about any aches or pains.

Maybe I was just really lucky?? Or perhaps these parents were just exaggerating? Giving the wrong diagnosis?? Nope.

It seems as though the boys waited until this summer to suddenly start complaining about constant nightly pain.
Nowhere is off limits either, legs, ankles, feet and hips. You name it!

Poor little guys must have hit a major growth spurt this summer amidst all my #CampMom activities (I know I feel they've grown an entire foot and seem like little men all of a sudden).

So I turned to old faithful...
You guessed it... Deep Blue! (Lovingly dubbed as "The Truth" in these parts)

I decided to give this a try, lo and behold "The Truth" shall set you free! It worked like a charm and made nighttime a bit more tolerable with these new baby /man problems. As with every other Deep Blue experience, the relief is immediate.

Needless to say, another reason to be sure I don't run out of this miracle oil EVER!!

Another win for #DrMom!

As always you can find out more about this oil and all of DoTerra's products at www.mydoterra.com/erikasessentials.

Sunflower Creative Arts - Remember Play? We Do!

Where do I begin?

Well, I suppose at the beginning..

When I first found out I was pregnant with my firstborn, I was elated! Shocked.... but elated! I spent the first few years of my marriage in a painful battle with severe endometriosis. After two pregnancy losses and being told by physicians that I only had one functioning ovary due to the damage of multiple laparoscopies, I was under the impression that my fertile days were numbered.

Well, one day at a spa and a birthday weekend #staycation was all it took apparently. Take that docs!

Needless to say, having two losses on my "fertility belt" did not make me a peaceful pregnant princess. And when my son was born safe and sound (after 18 hours of back labor and an emergency C-section), I had this longing desire to be sure everything was "perfect" (I know, I know...)

I did everything by the book, mommy & me classes, scheduled feeding / nap times, cloth diapering, even struggled endlessly with latch issues and severe reflux to try and breastfeed exclusively. Evan was four months old and I was looking for something else to do with my new little one, mall walks and classes were getting old. I was shopping at the Boca Raton Green Market (our Saturday morning ritual), drinking my coffee and eating a blueberry scone while picking fresh flowers for the house. I picked up a flyer from the guest table that jumped out above the rest. "Remember Play, We Do!". It was a flyer for a local children's center called Sunflower Creative Arts. So simple. Yet so profound.
I couldn't explain the intense draw this flyer had on me. When I got home I placed it on my corkboard above my desk and went on with my day.

At least once a week I would glance at this flyer and think, "I need to call that place and find out what sort of classes they offer". Time went on and I never got around to it. Although, when Evan turned 6 months old we found out we were pregnant, AGAIN! (Apparently I did have some time on my hands for other things) This bit of news hit us like a ton of bricks! We didn't think we could be more shocked than our first time around. So just like that, we were a family of four. The next year flew by as you can imagine, and "busy" was my middle name. I would still always look at my desk area and think about calling. I am not by any means a hoarder, I like to toss (recycle) any papers hanging around, so the simple fact that this flyer survived was a miracle in and of itself.

Finally, when Nate was just four months old, I picked up the card and called. I was greeted by a very friendly voice who informed me there was an affordable music class for babies on Friday mornings.
I showed up to "Circle of Song" with Nate in the Ergo and Evan on my hip, we were ready for some music! Boy did we get more.. The class was led by Susan Caruso, Founder of Sunflower Creative Arts. Susan wears many hats, one of which is being an honorary grandma to my boys (and the baby whisperer). Her warmth is electric and her authenticity is magnetic. Evan was immediately drawn to her (as was I) and participated in the music class while Nate slept.

Afterwards, she welcomed me as a newcomer and told me about a group of moms that meet every Friday after Circle of Song at Woodlands Park just across the parking lot from Sunflower Creative Arts. It was called "Share and Learn", I went right into Type A mommy brain thinking about whether it would "interfere" with Evans scheduled nap. I decided to go anyway, and boy am I glad that I did. Susan's warm and accepting presence (I've never met anyone more present than she) drew me in, I sat and listened as this group of women shared experiences and difficulties they were going through. Their stories were met with soft empathetic glances (not with judgment), and their struggles were greeted with acknowledgment and gentle guidance (not comparison). I found my tribe! Just before this music class I think I was looking for something different to do because I now realize I was probably in the throws of an emotional breakdown. With two babies under the age of two (one barely walking and the other constantly in arms), and virtually no help at all, this "control freak" was falling apart at the seams. I now know I needed to lose control in order to wake up and realize I was totally missing some of the journey.

(My Tribe... A few are missing)

There couldn't have been a better place to fall apart. The loving ears and arms of these women is where I found my strength and courage as a mom. Its where I found my "voice" and realized that "family" is truly a group experience of love and support. I went on to discover other programs Sunflower had to offer and enrolled Evan into Little Sprouts, a nature based art and play mommy and me program that introduces children and their parents to the basics of early cooperative play and problem solving skills. This class is where I met some really amazing women who I'm proud to call my support team. As time went on, Evan grew and was ready to make the natural progression from a Sprout to a Seedling. The Seedlings program is a parent / child co-operative program from ages 2-6 that focuses on the whole child. What really struck me about this program is that they really focus on embracing the whole child, their days aren't filled with endless preschool type fodder. They focus more on life skills, as opposed to teaching the children to memorize colors, shapes, letters and numbers.

Learning to work together...

At Seedlings my children learn more about problem solving, conflict resolution, thinking for themselves and outside of a box. Skills that will continue to sustain far into their future, and help them to nurture all kinds of of relationships and foster endless possibilities. Seedlings not only prepares them for school, but for life... This is invaluable to me. Throw in the fact that they have their own community garden (they use the produce grown to cook a meal for Boca Helping Hands), and that my 3 year old has been taught all about composting and my hippie heart skips a beat!

Tending to the garden..

Composting!

If you would have asked me two years ago if I would ever feel comfortable leaving my children anywhere with strangers to care for them in my absence I would have laughed in your face. Sunflower has created a community of love and compassion, they've created a family... One that I am proud to say that I am a part of, their parent co-operative program allows all the parents and children to get to know each other in the most raw and real way you can get to know someone, through play!

My favorite quote from Plato is:

"You learn more about a person in an hour of play, than in a year of conversation."

As you can see, EVERYONE has fun at Sunflower..

I can truly say that I love each and every child I've come across at Sunflower as if they were my own. You see, those life skills that are taught on the modest playground at Sunflower aren't exclusive to the children. I too have learned a lot by being a part of this community, a part of this family.. I will forever be changed because of it. I've learned the true meaning of compassion, and have been compelled to practice the art of true love in my everyday life. This renewed outlook has re-ignited my faith in humanity and in the world, I call myself extremely fortunate to know that my children will have this as their foundation. All too often I witness parents preparing their children for a "cold & cruel" world, this truly saddens me. To see them lose their innocence, or become jaded so young, it seems can only set us up for a much colder and cruel world in the future yet to come.

At first glance, the playground at Seedlings may not look like much. Some sand, some dirt, glue, paint and opportunity! But for those lucky few that get to see the wonder in a Seedlings eyes, or the respect that is extended to these tiny trusting hands, they know that this is a place of magic and wonder. A warm and safe place to try new things, make mistakes, and feel free to be yourself. Something I feel is lacking in educational institutions across America. (Don't even get me started on that)

It's summer break right now, but I'm already excited about whats to come this year with both of my boys being a Seedling. I can't wait to see all the milestones and lessons and even mistakes they make in learning about life in this sacred space. There are no cellular devices or even outside parent conversation allowed on the playground, the very definition of "childhood unplugged". With this new year comes new possibilities and I find that I'm yearning for my Sunflower dose just as much (if not more so) than my little guys. I can't wait to take advantage of the Parent Toolbox classes offered at Sunflower that give parents the tools and skills to deal with some of the really tough challenges in parenting.

Fall classes start on August 18th, if your'e interested in learning more about Sunflower Creative Arts you can check them out at www.sunflowercreativearts.org and register for a plethora of different classes offered for children of all ages. (There are also a few free programs to check out!) You can also give them a call at (561)482-3412 or shoot them an e-mail at: contact@sunflowercreativearts.org for more info. They work in conjunction with the Jane Goodall Foundation's National Program Roots & Shoots. The Roots & Shoots Club focuses on local social service projects showing care and concern for the environment, animals and the human community. I cannot wait for my boys to take part in this!

Tribe Picnic...

Growing up in NYC you learn a lot about life pretty early on. Riding the subway alone at eleven years old to visit my grandma, or walking to and from school alone is something I couldn't imagine letting the boys do, but its general practice for NYC kids (in my day). This, and suddenly losing my father to a horrific motorcycle accident at the age of fourteen certainly contributed to a certain amount of stress and responsibility that I was not ready to take on as a young girl. Let's just say my sense of "wonder" or "play" took a hike and the "real world" kicked in. Taking on such large amounts of responsibility at such a young age and being responsible for myself and my family sort of stole a piece of my adolescence I felt I couldn't get back... Or so I thought.

I was so consumed with surviving this tragedy in my life I'd forgotten how to just have fun at times. I'd become one of those people who was obsessed with work and getting ahead in life. Until I found my tribe... Through trying to give that sense of wonder and magic (that only your childhood can give you) to my boys, did I re-gain it for myself.

"Remember Play?", I do now...

It's Time To Sleep, My Love...

I've been getting a lot of questions about our bedtime "oil routine".

So here it is!

After baths, while dressing my boys I rub some OnGuard on their thymus for immune support if they've been around other kids or public places (which is pretty much everyday).
I put all of these oil mixtures in roll on bottles for easy application on tired wiggly boys. This allows me to keep a stash of oils in their medicine cabinet, it's all about location, location, location!

Then, I rub some Balance on the back of their necks for a grounding effect. (This helps calm all the "sillies".

I massage some diluted Lavender on their feet to help ease them into a peaceful sleep-mode.

Lately, I've added a new magical oil to the diffuser and the results are amazing! I already would diffuse Lavender each night, but I've also been adding a few drops of Vetiver and it is snooze central in my home! It helps to cut the bedtime shenanigans by half the time and my almost four year old's (waaaaahh!) old 5am wake up calls are now at 7am! (Hey, it's progress people!)

After applying our oils it's bedtime stories with some cuddles, then off to dreamland!

You can learn more about the oils I've mentioned at www.mydoterra.com/erikasessentials

If you'd like to learn more about giving your medicine cabinet an "essential" makeover, feel free to email me with questions about an upcoming webinar at EssentiallyErika@gmail.com.

"Germs Are Not For Sharing"

Anyone who really knows me knows that I am a bit of a recovering germophobe. In fact I've had to learn to "curb" my 'tude towards germs and those who enjoy sharing them in order for me to keep some friends or enjoy any social activities.

I wouldn't say that I am currently "germ-friendly", but I'm certainly a bit more "germ-tolerant". With all of the online debates, and information swirling around leading to the conclusion that some germs are necessary in order to grow a much healthier immune system. I am aware, (nor is it my wish) that my children cannot grow up inside of a "germ-free" bubble. In my quest to find inner peace and allow myself to live more in the "now" I have learned how not to overreact to some of the inevitable germ sharing experiences that come with toddlerhood.

HOWEVER... I do feel as though there is a definite group of people (you know who you are) who take this approach to another level. And by another level I mean they downright do not care who they infect, where they spread their germs or why they should be more mindful. Let me start by just laying it all out there, all children are different and handle illness differently. What may just be a nagging runny nose for your child, can be two weeks of breathing treatments for another child! (As seen on www.youaretheroots.com) What may be only a day or two of inconvenience in your home with your ONE child, may be a month of recirculating germs for a family of FOUR.

Here's some advice:

If your child is sick, STAY HOME!

If you are sick, STAY HOME!

If ANYONE in your home is sick, do NOT show up to public places where there is bound to be tons of kids. i.e., birthday parties, theme parks, local parks, libraries, play dates, indoor playscapes, and certainly not MY house!

STAY HOME!

(And get better of course)

If you need to explain to your child(ren) why they cannot see their friends, feel free to read them "Germs are not for Sharing!"

I know there are certain situations that are just beyond a parents' control, but the majority of the time its only a matter of common courtesy.

On our recent trip to the www.schoolhousemuseum.org, I witnessed a mom hovering over the train table sneezing all over the children! Not to mention touching all of the trains, constantly intervening and would not allow the children to play peacefully or work out any "sharing struggles" amongst themselves. She was even touching other children re-positioning them at the train table! As I looked onto the room of poor unsuspecting children who would soon have sniffles of their own (myself and my boys included), and the poor parents whose holiday weekend was changing before their very eyes, all I could think was "I just ran out of Onguard!"

(My go-to germ killing powerhouse essential oil)
We said a brief goodbye the train table and we hightailed it out of there. I dilute Onguard with Fractionated Coconut Oil in a 1:15 ration (that's 1 drop of OnGuard to 15 drops of FCO, told you this stuff was powerful), that's all you need. I also use this oil in my all natural hand sanitizer recipe, if used before contacting germs it can act as a barrier until you can get to a hand washing station.

Needless to say, we've spent the rest of the week recovering from "Sneezy's" attack on us all, I wonder how the rest of the group from our excursion is holding up.

Since we were already pretty sniffly by the time my stash arrived...
(nothing makes a girl happier these days...)

I had to do damage control and put together what is lovingly dubbed as "The Cold Bomb".

Now this is packing the heat!!! (literally)

Cold Bomb Recipe:

5 drops Onguard
5 drops Melaleuca
3 drops Oregano

There are different variations of "The Cold Bomb", this is the one that worked for me. I put it into a roll-on bottle and applied every two hours for about 8 hours. Within minutes I was feeling better, and within a day my symptoms were gone.

This, mixed with some diluted doTerra Breathe (I also use this in my homemade vapor cream) rubbed on the chest a few times daily is more than enough to get you "Breathe-ing" for sure. The relief was instant I didn't have to wait for some cold meds to "kick in", and I didn't have to expose myself or my family to any chemicals in the process.

#DrMom to the rescue!

As always, if you need any more info on any of doTerra's oils you can find it at: www.mydoterra.com/erikasessentials

Now, I'm curious.. Where is the last place you or your little ones got sick?

Essential Oils: Summertime Stash

Summer is here and in full effect!

Here at #CampMom, we are keeping very busy on our hunt for all natural playscapes that offer up an opportunity for "true play". (Imagination included)You can read about some of these adventures at www.ModernBocaMom.com.

During this process we have hit a few bumps in the road, i.e. bug bites, sunburns, bumps & bruises, even a sniffle or two. (Onguard withdrawals, more on that later)

I've been busy nursing two sneezy toddlers this week and concocting all my blends to last through the rest of the summer, as always I'm sharing them with you!

Bug Spray Recipe:

2oz glass spray bottle
10-15 drops doTerra's TerraShield Blend
Fill the rest of the glass bottle with water, shake and spray!

This has helped tons and smells way better than a lot of my favorite all natural over the counter brands (most of the all natural kinds smell really strong).

Homemade Lysol Disinfectant Spray

1oz glass spray bottle
5-6 drops doTerra's Purify Blend (I also use this blend in my homemade deodorant)
Fill the rest of the glass bottle with water, shake and spray!

This came in handy this week when a close friend of mine was visiting with her three gorgeous babes. I had been nursing two sniffly toddlers earlier in the week, so I made sure to spray everything before they came over. #germsarenotforsharing

Homemade Sunburn Spray:

10 drops Lavender
10 drops Frankincense
10 drops Melaleuca
10 drops Peppermint
Fill the rest of a 15ml glass bottle with Fractionated Coconut Oil

This is a miracle worker for the hubby, I cant seem to get him to wear enough protection and his poor skin always pays the price. This sunburn spray will not only soothe and protect, but it also shortens the duration of what I like to call the "Lobster Face".

Owie Spray:

20 drops Melaleuca
20 drops Lavender
10 drops Frankincense
40 drops of Fractionated Coconut Oil
(I like to add a few drops of the miracle oil Helichrysum)

This is a Mommy Must Have!!!

Having two boys so close in age has proven to test not only my blood pressure, but also my cat-like reflexes. I'm able to reach for this spray in an instant and it has everything I need to help my little guys.
It not only disinfects and soothes, but the Lavender and Helichrysum also aid in speeding up the healing process and keeping any germs from getting in. (Annnnnnnnnnd resume playing!)

Plus, this will not sting or burn like some of those "tried and true" chemical ridden over the counter remedies.

With the over-exposure of chemicals in today's society, it feels good to have some sort of control or say-so in the process of helping to heal and soothe our children of the sometimes uncomfortable experiences in every day life. Let's hear it for #DrMom!

Happy Fourth Everyone!
